The perfect tour for first-time visitors who want to experience the main jewels of Paris all in a day.

On this tour, we’ll learn about the history of Paris starting from the Roman era to the ancient French kings, and then through the occupation of World War II to how Paris is evolving up to today. I’ll share an easy-to-follow commentary with interesting details and many anecdotes.

We start our day together at the gorgeous Jardins du Luxembourg, from where we’ll continue through medieval streets surrounding the majestic Panthéon and then down hidden paths that lead to open-air markets bustling with commerce. We’ll stop at leafy squares with lovely fountains, charming boutiques, stores, and cafés and get to see all different scenes from daily life in Paris. The history of Paris continues while we make our way to the islands on the river Seine.

Not to be missed, Notre Dame Cathedral is a fascinating Gothic structure. During our visit, hear about the legend of the carvings in the façade, the flying buttresses, what happened to it during the Revolution, and its famous rose windows. Since we can’t go inside due to the fire of April 2019, we’ll still get to explore the islands and surrounding area.

Lunch is on Île St Louis, the pretty village-like island behind Notre Dame. It’s a 17th century wonder of architecture and the island is filled with cafés, crêperies, bistros, boutiques, fromageries, hand-made chocolate shops, and a wonderful store selling exquisite jams and jellies, vinegars and even flavored mustards from Provence. Of course, we will also stop off for the famous ice cream made on the island.

Our walk will continue, now focusing on 16th and 17th century Paris, as we take one of the stone bridges into the back streets of Le Marais.

In the heart of Le Marais, a magical area of narrow, medieval streets, cobbled passageways and grandiose mansions, we’ll visit the stunning Place des Vosges. Along the way, we will get to window shop at some of the most wonderful local fashion and accessories boutiques.

As we wrap up our day together, we’ll wander through the Jewish Quarter and take in the atmospheric boutiques and gourmet shops before finishing on top of the George Pompidou center for spectacular views over Paris.

This fantastically fun tour takes in French bakeries and pattiseries, markets, and other local eateries. You’ll get a firsthand view into the secrets of how the world’s best breads, cakes, and pastries are made.

But this is not only a culinary journey into the Parisian gourmet food scene - as we eat, we’ll also wander the area and I’ll share info on its history as well as loads of anecdotes and local secrets.

We’ll stop to explore the oldest market in Paris and countless gourmet shops and stalls specialising in epicurean delights available only in France. The experience includes tastings (or a goodie bag) of many French specialities as well as fun interactions with the vendors!

For a particularly curious stop, we’ll visit an exquisite pastry/cake boutique that serves only one product, something that is becoming a trend in Paris at the moment. The treat is beyond delicious and all hand-made on the premises.

While we’ll do a lot of eating, you’ll also get to learn about the food laws and regulations governing France, many of which differ quite significantly from those of other places. I’ll also share local insight into how to distinguish and choose products according to their use and seasonality, and how this seasonal focus impacts the French diet and gastronomic philosophy.

Housing cafés, theatres, shops and apartments, the arcades of Palais Royal became a meeting place for people from all walks of life during the 17th century. But what was hidden behind those façades? The cafes saw pre-revolutionary plotting and the Palais Royal became known as a hotbed of gambling dens and prostitution.

Today the area’s gardens are one of Paris' most elegant and tranquil spots. Many shops under the arcades sell prints and antiques and still maintain their old world ambiance.

This walk takes you through tiny streets leading to the charming glass-roofed galleries and enchanting passages which weave their way through Paris’ boulevards. These galleries were built during the early part of the 19th century and hailed the beginnings of a new type of shopping in Paris.

We continue the walk into Paris’ most lively open-air market street, filled with an unforgettable gastronomic ambiance.

New wine bars (bistrot à vins) in Paris are emerging and changing into hyped-up boutique establishments with expensive wines and elaborate menus. Not really my style.

I prefer to showcase Paris’ traditional watering holes serving old classic wines forgotten in time, but still loved and frequented by locals since after the war. These are places where locals come to take in the old-world ambiance and have a glass of their favorite wines accompanied by a platter of charcuterie (cold cut local hams and cheeses) before they head off for dinner or home.

During our visit, we’ll sample wines ranging from forever-classics to interesting bio-dynamic locally produced vintages.

I am not a sommelier by any means, but rather an enthusiastic wine drinker and guide who loves to show the secret wine bars off the beaten track where we can enjoy an authentic local ambience.

Impossible to talk about wine without also including cheese, we’ll cover the history of wine, the pairing of local wines with regional cuisine and cheeses, how to decipher all the terms on wine labels, local appellations, trends in the French wine industry, and fun anecdotes.

For the gourmet part of the tour, the walk also takes in one of the oldest markets in Paris, a lively atmosphere with tastings along the way and time to shop for local and European products and delicacies (great for gifts to take home!).
